You’ve probably clicked link after link to Wisconsin Wedding Photographers’ websites and social media pages. Every site is starting to blur together, every highlight reel looks the same, and you’re beginning to wonder if “documentary,” “editorial,” and “candid style” all just mean the same thing dressed up in different words.

I’ve been photographing weddings full-time since 2015, and I’ve sat across from a lot of couples who felt exactly like this. So instead of another pitch, here’s what I’d actually tell you if we were having coffee and you asked me how to pick someone.

Ignore the award badges

Those little “Couples’ Choice” or “Best of Wisconsin” icons at the bottom of a photographer’s site feel like they mean something. Mostly they don’t. A lot of them are pay-to-play, or handed out based on how many weddings someone books in a directory, not on the actual quality of the work. They’re great for marketing, but they don’t give you any evidence on the quality of a photographer’s work.

Ask for a full gallery, not a highlight reel

Anyone can put together twenty gorgeous images. Your wedding is closer to six hundred photos, shot in a dark church, a bright tent, under a canopy of trees with splotchy high-noon daylight, a disco-lit dance floor at 10 PM, and even more tricky lighting situations or tough angles. The portfolio on someone’s homepage tells you what they’re capable of during their best five minutes. A full gallery tells you what they’re capable of on your actual day.

If a photographer won’t show you a complete gallery from start to finish, that’s worth noting.

This one’s easy to miss, but it matters more than almost anything else. Pull up a full gallery and check whether the couple looks like themselves at 2 PM in the sun and again at 10 PM under string lights or a DJ’s colored uplighting. If their skin tone shifts wildly from photo to photo, that’s not a style choice. That’s an inconsistent edit.

Trends fade fast. The orange-and-teal look from a few years back already reads as dated. What doesn’t age is a photo where you look like you, lit honestly, in whatever room you happened to be standing in.

Ask what happens if they can’t be there

This is the question you might not think to ask, but it’s another one that matters a lot. If your photographer gets the flu, breaks an ankle, or has a family emergency, what’s the actual plan? “I’d find someone” is not a plan. A name pulled from a Facebook group the week of your wedding is not a plan either.

Ask specifically. Listen for whether the answer is a real system, someone who already knows the studio’s style and has shot alongside them before, or just a shrug with no real explanation.

Pay attention to how much of your day gets handed over to posed portraits

Some photographers need two, sometimes three hours of formal portraits to feel confident about the day. That’s two or three hours you’re not at your own reception, not catching up with your college roommate or extended family member who flew in, not actually being present at your wedding.

An experienced photographer will gather information on the venue, have a well-executed and time-efficient plan for all your posed portraits, and work with you on the timeline to find something that fits your preferences for the day and allows them to have enough time to capture portraits you’ll love.

Notice whether pricing is upfront

If a website makes you fill out a form just to find a starting number, that’s information they’re choosing to withhold from you while you’re trying to build a realistic budget. You deserve real numbers before you spend any emotional energy deciding if someone’s a fit.

This isn’t about finding the cheapest option. It’s about being able to compare honestly instead of guessing. While some pricing may vary based on your specific needs as a couple, a general range or an estimate of what most couples spend on a specific photographer can easily be listed on a website to show respect to your time as you research.

Trust how it feels to talk to them

Have you sent emails out to photographers asking questions or requesting more information? If you have, read the inquiry response. Does it sound like an actual person responded to what you wrote, or does it feel like a form letter with your name dropped in? Are you able to get a hold of the actual photographer who would be shooting your day and have a real conversation with them?

If you can, get on a call with any photographer you’re seriously considering. You’re going to spend ten or more hours with this person on one of the most important days of your life. You deserve to know exactly who they are, how they communicate, and if they click with you and your partner. If a conversation with them already feels stiff or sales-heavy before you have even booked them, that tends to show up on the wedding day too.

Bottom line is trust your gut.
