There’s something timeless about a picnic: the fresh air, soft blankets, shared food, and all the sweet in-between moments. For Shannon + Riley’s engagement session, we brought those classic picnic vibes to life with a French, vintage film–inspired theme at the gorgeous Pope Farm Conservancy in Middleton, WI. The result? A dreamy, romantic session that felt like a scene straight out of an old French film.

Engagement photos don’t have to feel posed or formal. In fact, some of the best sessions are the ones that highlight the simple, everyday ways couples connect. Picnic engagement photos create that perfect mix of relaxed, romantic, and playful.

With Shannon + Riley, it was all about embracing an aesthetic that matched their personalities: effortless, classic, and joy-filled. Instead of a standard photo shoot, they created a whole atmosphere. Think vintage-inspired details, a cozy blanket in the grass, a bottle of wine, a cake, and golden-hour light flooding through the fields at Pope Farm.

Pope Farm, located just outside of Madison in Middleton, WI, is already known for its beautiful natural landscapes and sunflower fields. But on this evening, it transformed into a little slice of France.
Shannon wore a flowy dress that brought a romantic, European touch to the photos, while Riley kept things classic and timeless. They shared wine, cake, and soft laughter as the sun set behind them. Every detail—from the styling to the location—was designed to feel cinematic and nostalgic, almost like flipping through an old roll of film.

What made this session magical wasn’t just the props or location; it was the way Shannon + Riley naturally interacted. They laughed, leaned into each other, and let their personalities shine. That authenticity is what makes picnic engagement photos so memorable.

If you’re considering engagement photos in Wisconsin, Pope Farm Conservancy is a dream location:
🌻 Variety of backdrops – From wildflower fields to tree-lined paths, you’ll have endless options.
🌅 Golden hour magic – The wide-open landscape makes for incredible sunsets.
🌿 Romantic + quiet – Unlike busier downtown spots, Pope Farm offers a private, serene atmosphere—perfect for couples who want intimacy in their photos.
Inspired by Shannon + Riley? Here are a few tips for planning your own:
🥖 Add meaningful details – Bring your favorite wine, baked goods, or a blanket that feels special. Props that reflect your story make the photos unique.
🎞 Play with aesthetics – Go vintage, boho, or modern minimalist. Your theme can set the tone for the entire shoot.
✨ Stay natural – The best photos come from the candid in-between moments—laughing, cuddling, or sharing a quiet toast.
📸 Choose the right photographer – Look for someone, like us, who captures both editorial beauty and documentary-style candids, so you get a mix of artful and genuine moments.

Picnic sessions like Shannon + Riley’s are exactly why I love being a Madison engagement photographer. They blend romance, fun, and personality into one experience you’ll actually enjoy—not just a series of posed shots. Whether you’re dreaming of a French-inspired picnic at Pope Farm or a laid-back lakeside evening in Madison, your engagement photos should feel like you.
